What is an Intern Psychologist?
An intern psychologist is a person who is trained to provide psychological assessments, intakes and appropriate referrals. They are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and work under the supervision of a licensed Psychologist. They have 5 Years full-time formal education in psychology, which may include a three year Bachelor’s degree majoring in psychology or equivalent thereof, plus an Honours degree in psychology, plus a directed Master’s degree programme in psychology approved by the HPCSA. An intern must complete a 12 month full-time internship, and write the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology exam before qualifying to be a psychologist. Interns always work under the supervision of a Senior Psychologist; work is supervised by professional staff, and individual clinical work is supervised by a licensed psychologist.
